By Yvonne Montesantos On Sunday, May 6th in the elegant flower-laden
Grand Ballroom of the Crowne Plaza Hotel, in New York; the Hellenic Community
from around this nation all gathered together to pay tribute to our most vital
community members- our Teachers. I use a capital "T" for Teachers; they deserve
this distinction in the same manner that someone has "Dr." or "Esquire" starting
off with a capital letters. Over 250 supporters of Hellenic Paideia traveled far
and wide to pay tribute to the Teachers who have and will continue to have a
major role in the perpetuation of the Greek language and culture, in America.
The Honorable Theodore Spyropoulos, SAE-USA Region Coordinator spoke of the
importance our omogeneia places on making our Youth our top priority. The
keynote speaker of this meaningful Tribute to our Teachers was Mr. Theodore
Kalmoukos, renowned journalist of The National Herald, who brought the omogeneia
to a standing ovation, when he with great dignity and fervor spoke reminded us
what a critical juncture we're in- the time is right now- not a minute later to
put all essential resources to work at the heart and soul of Hellenism--- our
Paideia!
Ms. Dorie Klissas, Producer at CBS News, graciously introduced the notables
at the Dais. These honored guests were presented by Ms. Klissas and Mrs. Nancy
Biska. They included; Dr. Ioannis Efthymiopoulos, Director of the Greek
Education Dept. Representing H.E. Archbishop Demetrios; The Honorable Karolos
Gadis, Minister-Deputy Chief of Mission Representing His Excellency Alexandros
P. Mallias; The Honorable Theodore Spyropoulos, SAE-USA Region Coordinator; The
Honourable Martha Mavromatis, Consul General of Cyprus in New York; Mr. George
Vlykides, Educational Counselor, REpresenting the Honorable Catherine Boura,
Consul General of Greece in New York; The Honorable Em. Velivasakis, President
of the Hellenic American National Council; The Hon. Antonis Diamataris,
Publisher of the National Herald; Mrs. Maria Makedon, Direct Archdiocesan
District Director; Mr. Apostolos Foundas, President of "Prometheus" Association.
A wonderful classical musical interlude was sung by the famed Opera Soprano,
Mrs. Helena Biktasheva-Fousteris, and the delightful Dance Group from the Plato
School danced a soulful Smyrnan selection. The Closing Remarks and Benediction
were by H.E. Metropolitan Paisios of Tyanon. Among the many honorees was the
educator extraordinaire, Rev. Dr. Constantelos.
