Greek Teachers honored by Omogeneia in NY |

National Herald- May 9th, 2007 NEW YORK (VOG)- On Sunday, May
6th in the Grand Ballroom of the Crowne Plaza Hotel near La Guardia Airport in
New York; the Hellenic Community from around the country gathered together to
pay tribute to the most vital community members- Teachers. Over 250 supporters
of Hellenic Paideia traveled to pay tribute to the Teachers who have and will
continue to have a major role in the perpetuation of the Greek language and
culture in America. The Honorable Theodore Spyropoulos, SAE-USA Region
Coordinator spoke of the importance the omogeneia places on making Youth top
priority. The keynote speaker of the Tribute to the Teachers was Mr. Theodore
Kalmoukos, renowned journalist of The National Herald. Ms. Dorie Klissas,
Producer at CBS News, introduced the notables at the Dais and included; Dr.
Ioannis Efthymiopoulos, Director of the Greek Education Dept. Representing H.E.
Archbishop Demetrios; The Honorable Karolos Gadis, Minister-Deputy Chief of
Mission Representing His Excellency Alexandros P. Mallias; The Honorable
Theodore Spyropoulos, SAE-USA Region Coordinator; The Honourable Martha
Mavromatis, Consul General of Cyprus in New York; Mr. George Vlykides,
Educational Counselor, REpresenting the Honorable Catherine Boura, Consul
General of Greece in New York; The Honorable Em. Velivasakis, President of the
Hellenic American National Council; The Hon. Antonis Diamataris, Publisher of
the National Herald; Mrs. Maria Makedon, Direct Archdiocesan District Director;
Mr. Apostolos Foundas, President of "Prometheus" Association. A wonderful
classical musical interlude was sung by the famed Opera Soprano, Mrs. Helena
Biktasheva-Fousteris, and the delightful Dance Group from the Plato School
danced a soulful Smyrnan selection. The Closing Remarks and Benediction were by
H.E. Metropolitan Paisios of Tyanon. Among the many honorees was the educator
extraordinaire, Rev. Dr. Constantelos. From this year forward, the mother?s of
the Omogeneia will also be honoured who in every way contribute and assist in
educating their children in Greek Paideia. This year's recipient was Evangelia
Diamataris, wife of National Herald publisher, Antonis Diamataris.
